leaky rear window

Marshall's law strikes again...

Biblical rain has found its way through a small crack in the external "ceramic band" at the top of the rear window and down into the cabin.

Any thoughts on the best way to reseal? Silicone? Grout? Patch it in place or scrape it out and redo from scratch?

Moses had a similar problem but God knows how he fixed it

However, a patch will inevitably lead to Marshall's second law, so do you do the Rolls Royce redo?

have a go at masking either side of the top seal and smear tiger seal. if you use a latex glove with finger tip dipped in olive oil, it will be a nice smooooooth surface.

Although I've not had to tackle this particular repair I'd be tempted to howk out the old stuff and re-fill with black silicone

Just for fun, I asked a major windscreen chain for an online quote for removal and resealing of the rear window. They came up with £148. Given the work required, that sounds like a bargain offer!

I've never had any luck with Captain Tolley. I think I'd cut out as much as I could and replace with a proper polyurethane windscreen sealant. (That's what I did on our motorhome and it hasn't leaked since.)

I did this a couple of years ago, with a small tube of black silicone sealant I got from Halfords. Sealed it perfectly, been fine ever since.

Didn't hawk the old stuff out. I carefully stuck two strips of masking tape across the whole width first, for totally neat edges. Then ran the sealant across straight from the tube, followed by my fingertip to smooth the sealant down, then quickly removed the masking tape before it set. Job done.

The tube is still somewhere in the shed. Will have a look tomorrow, hopefully tell you what it was. Cost very little, under a tenner I think.

OK, have looked in shed - what I used was a small 40g tube of Granville Black Silicone Sealant.

The tube comes with a little nozzled cap that you can cut to the right size of bead. Like I say, has sealed the rear window perfectly for 2+ years now and, with masking tape, was really easy to apply.

Thanks Malcolm - I have some of there here for other jobs. Good stuff for when the caulking gun and a tube of silicone would be overkill.

Tolley's seems to have done its job of getting into the cracks and sealing them - which is what it's supposed to do, and what I hoped it would do - after multiple applications over a 4 day period. (and it may have rejuvenated the existing sealant a bit too). When it's a bit drier, I'll add some silicone to create a new external barrier.
