2nd Drain / breather hose in rear bumper

Post by MetBlue »

What is it? And where does it feed from?
I know about the infamous filler breather pipe that does 2 laps of the boot before exiting in the centre underside of the bumper, but I also have a second hole along side it.
I noticed on one of the cars at Ollie's memorial there were 2 pipes showing at this point, so it's clearly not a botched earlier repair.

Interesting - I also have a second hole near the one for the breather, but nothing in it. I assumed someone just made a 2nd hole for some unknown reason.

Its quite common to see two holes at the bottom of the bumper - mine is the same, but I have only ever seen one pipe coming out.

Afternoon Gents,

Suspect that may have been my old car - likewise I had 2 holes and when I replaced the tank breather hose and fitted a solid state SU pump, the pump also had a breather.

So I ran a second pipe from that.

Cheers,

Andy

Which leads to the next question, why have we got two nostrils when one would do the job ?

Would that be Brian's car now?
I'm pretty sure it was an Excel that overnighted at the meal and by process of elimination, equally sure that's the car I saw 2 pipes on.

There's no grommet in it, so maybe it's just a drain to stop water building up in the bottom (or CAB snook in on the night shift to add a bit of lightness 😁).

Hi Tony,

Red 87 SE, belongs to Dave from Wymondham now. I can see it in a number of the photos.

He's a lucky chap - I wish I had never sold it :(

No grommets in either hole and they weren't in line either. Perhaps it was a simple as Lotus adding the second hole for hanging up to paint?

Like the 'add lightness' theory though

Could be Dave's car. He didn't stay, but it was definitely in the car park on the Friday.

No, it was Dave Court's D reg. I believe he bought it from Andy D fairly recently.

Strangely, mine has no nostrils! When I replaced the breather hose, the end segment (which came out in one piece) just terminated somewhere around the middle of the bumper, between the bodyshell and the bumper itself. Looking at the photos of mine while the bumper was off for respray, there weren't even any securing clips for the hose.

I am probably wrong but I had always presumed that the second hole was for a second fuel tank breather that was originally intended to be installed during development, like most esprits. Obviously the Excel has two filler caps (one a dummy) and I seem to recall that a similar arrangement existed on the Elite.
