Gear Lever Gaiter
Hello All,
My black rubbery plastic gear lever gaiter (the big one that's held onto the transmission tunnel by a steel ring and four small screws, not the rubber grommet down on the box itself, nor the leather one tied to the gear knob) is badly split and I need to replace it.
It's part number B075U6039K, item A049 on page 47.06A of the parts book, but "obsolete" from Lotus.
Lotusbits don't have an unsplit one.
I've tried repairing it with duct tape - which fell off within 5 mins of driving along (it's hot under there).
I've been looking on eBay for similar gear lever gaiters from other cars, but none have such a big upper apperture.
Anyone have a good one for sale?
Is there another car with a similar gaiter? The key dimensions are approx 12 cms O/D at base, and approx 3.3 cms I/D at top. It's this top measurement which is unusual.
Or else any other suggestions please?
Many thanks,
Tony

Re: Gear Lever Gaiter
Depends where it has split.
If it's near the top I'd suggest grafting a bit of a steering rack gaiter on, or just put it inside the original. Other end, how about universal CV boot?
How about something like this?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-E34-GEAR-STIC ... 3cb01cebe8
or this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NISSAN-Skyline-Ge ... 4838c7e6a7
It may be worth a wander round a breaker's yard, look at lots of makes & models, you're bound to find something that will do the job eventually, even if it means some work to make it fit.

My gaiter is split all round the lowest fold.
I like the universal CV boot idea - hadn't thought of that. Will investigate sizes available tomorrow. Meanwhile have just asked the two eBay vendors for the key dimensions of their gaitors.
Thanks again,
Tony

Thanks for your reply.robertverhey wrote:It's a Toyota Supra / Celica part surely?

Well, you might well think so - except that it's an "075" part number and therefore first used on the Type 75 "Elite S1", (not of course the Type 14 Elite (the real one...), but rather to distinguish from the Type 83 "Elite S2". So doesn't this mean it predates any link with Toyota?
And yet it does have a big upper aperture to match the fat part of the gear lever, which does have an "089" part number...
I do have the Haynes Supra Repair Manual, but it contains no pictures/diagrams of the Toyota equivalent.
All further thoughts very welcome!
Thanks
Tony

Hi Tony
Yes you are correct, looking at my parts manual I see there's a part B075U6039K..................which looks a bit like a CV joint, Might need to improvise or wander around the wreckers until you find something

Here's the item Tony is referring to:

I want one of these as well, as you can see. Occasionally when I'm driving there's a cold draught coming up the transmission tunnel and it's really, really uncomfortable.

Re: Gear Lever Gaiter
Hello All,
I've heard back from Steve at S J Sportscars, as follows:
It is not obsolete. It was replaced by B082F4114F @ £31.78 + post @ £11.50 + vat.
NB This is to post to FRANCE.
He has them in stock, so today I've ordered one.
B082F4114F looks to be the part number for the gaiter in the Eclat and some Esprits by the way.
I'll let you all know how I get on!
Cheers
Tony

The replacement (Esprit?) one received - and successfully fitted - today.tonycharente wrote:Hello All,

The hole at the top of the new one is tiny compared to the original and in my view there is no way it can be fitted without cutting off the top 2 or 3 centimetres. But having done this it then fits snuggly over the "fat" part of the gear lever, as per the original fitment but more snuggly (the original fitment not being at all tight).
Without cutting the top off the new one, as far as I can see you can only slide the gaiter down a little way, and the gaiter cannot be attached at its base - or if you managed to do so it would be stretched up very tight and not at all "concertina-ed"
The overall diameter of the base of the new one is a bit smaller than the original, but it's still possible to get the four little screws in place.
Problem solved.
I took a photo of the two gaiters side by side, but I can't see how to attach a photo - I can email one to anyone if requested.

Re: Gear Lever Gaiter
Resurrecting this thread, and I thought I saw this on here somewhere- I just fitted this gaiter from eBay on my 84 Excel, some trimming and it works better than the original, with more clearance under the leather gaiter.
