The Lotus Grand Tourers

I'm not a big fan of Facebook either, but much of my younger family is, and it seems to be where I need to go in order to keep up with the kids & grandkids.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to directly post files to this forum. Of late, several people have posted photos on Facebook and then used the Img feature along with the URL to get the photo to show up here. I was hoping something similar would work for other files via the URL feature, but that clearly failed. The mere mention of Fb seems to have offended a few people, so I'm sorry I tried.

Ease of posting images in particular has attracted folk to Facebook group pages and away from the traditional bulletin board format- which has greatly reduced forum activity for other clubs. The Imp Club, which had a very active forum 5 years ago, is a case-in-point - the Imp forum is not quite a ghost town atm, but you do see the occasional tumbleweed blowing through - and the facebook group is smokin' (so I am told).

I never take offence at what people say here, although that might not be a vice versa arrangement because of my p--taking I do that to everybody everywhere. Its my age... you know, when it comes to so called social media .... nurse, where my pills.

For Tim Engel. I have from the Lotus Elite Excel Workshop Manual a front view of the suspension with dimensions
and I have the Excel dimensions from the logbook. Camber angle has a significant increase to 4 1/2º from 3º

I found your (long) description very correct. Ackermann is a concept not a have it or not have it. The Excel indeed has the steering mechanism in front of the wheel centres and consequently the steering arms ball joints are set wider than the
wheel centres width.

On the Excel with minimal Ackerman, parking at full lock induces scrubbing of the tyre against the asphalt as the wheel is going slowly in a different direction to the car and each rubber tread knuckle has to slip/scrub.
At driving speed for most bends the Ackermann effect is minimal as the wheels steering the car are only slightly divergent.

Back to the original question of tyres rubbing bodywork, get a good friend to sit in the car with the engine running and lie
under the front of the car and ask for full lock, see if the tyre approaches the body work. Then opposite lock.
If both sides rub you have oversize tyres or way out wheel alignement.
If you have one side rubbing the balljoints are unevenly threaded to the track rod, probably someone trying to get
the steering wheel straight after a steering rack (bad) refurbish.
