While you have the mechanism apart, it's worth cleaning up the coil spring and treating it to some slippery grease instead of the sticky stuff that the original grease has become over the years.

OK Will do.
I am a bit concerned how stiff the arm is. I'm talking about how it pivots on the back plate. I have sprayed it with a variety of WD40 and other oils which have helped but it is still quite stiff to move by hand. You would think after 27 years of wear it would be loose with possibly too much play in it. Not sure how stiff it should be as I have nothing to compare it too. I'm not taking the drivers side one off to compare it!!

Great service from Lotusbits. Ordered the new motor at 11.50 on Monday and it was delivered by 10am Tuesday. Only expected a motor but got the arm and mounting plate as well. They tested it before sending so fingers crossed. Will fit it on Sunday weather permitting.

Fitted the Lotusbits motor to my lifting arm as it was less rusty. Tested it with a 12v supply and all worked perfectly.
Fitted the assembly to the car and the window went up but wouldn't come down!!
Checked fuses but both were OK.
Connected a 12 v supply (See picture below) and the window went up and down no problem.
Switched the Relays (there is one for up and one for down) and now the window went down but not up so obviously a broken relay.
Replaced the relay and now all is well in the world again. :D
The original motor is definitely broken – won’t work if I connect it to 12V- but repeatedly trying the switch when the motor was ‘stuck’ must have somehow damaged the relay.

This isn’t an issue, but I was wondering, where is the relay for the driver’s side window? The fuse is on the driver’s side but no mention of a relay in the service notes? If you pull the two relays from the passenger side the driver’s window still works.

On an earlier post above, I mentioned the fuses on the passenger side were all wrong and one had blown. I have put the correct fuses in, and now the dim dip works the way it was intended. When I switch on my side lights the pods come up with dimmed lights – that has never happened since I have owned the car – 2007!!

Relays ? There are no relays for the windows on the later models (MY89 onwards) - unless someone's been fiddling with the wiring.

Relay 1 and 2 sheet 16 MD version do both sides

Also Section MF Page 40 (1987 onwards) shows two relays on the passenger side just above the window lift fuses. It was the first relay from the bottom that was faulty and now I have replaced it, the window works fine. Like Stuart – I assumed that the two relays worked for both windows – but, I had one faulty one and the Drivers side worked fine – also when I pulled both relays out, the driver’s side still worked in both directions??

Now I have a copy of the circuit diagram, those relays are there only for the passenger side window and are a (completely unnecessary) way of allowing two switches to operate the same motor by using the relays + some diodes as an intermediate switching arrangement to ensure that only one switch is obeyed at a time (I think).

By the time the loom was revised, someone had worked out that they could just put the switches in parallel(ish) and it would still work.

(They're not quite in parallel, there's a bit of clever wiring going on the prevent things going pop if the two switches are operated at the same time).

So there is no relay for the drivers side. I know from practical experience if you remove the relay at the bottom the window will go up but not down and if you remove the relay - next one up - the window will go down but not up.

Correct. The relays are for the passenger side only. The driver's side has direct connection from switch to motor.
