I have been finding that oil leaks are the way to go for those wanting to dismantle their cars. They make ease of releasing bolts Even the manifold studs came off nicely albeit a PITA job even with the engine out on the floor!

Note: better to access with the engine mount bracket off (now back on as a topple stabilizer)





The steering rack is suitably oiled ready for its removal

I removed the prop shaft whilst I'm playing and pleased to report it is in very good nick. No backlash or twist evident.

Needed to stop the torque converter sliding off its spigot for transport so made a Lotus yellow brace

You'd be better to remove the torque converter completely before transporting the gearbox . Lovely Lotus-yellow bracket though!

Hey Pete, for us (non auto) manual box virgin thickies, can you explain that one? Eg. Is it heavy?

The torque converter is very heavy - it makes lifting the gearbox almost impossible on your own (if you're weedy like me!). However - the main reason for taking it off is that if it shifts for any reason it will break the oil pump drive dogs inside the gearbox - lots of trouble! Stuart's brace looks fine but I like to be cautious about these things + I've already got a bad back

Is the torque converter being rebuilt as well ? I know these have a lock up clutch - is it being replaced due to wear?
I had to replace a torque converter for this reason on a Mercedes SL. Found a place in Bristol that specialised in this, but was going to cost !!! Ended up with a low mileage used one.

Hopefully TC is fine. It's not on the list. However, book says always send TC with GB when servicing. My file has a life time guarantee for the TC. It's written on chocolate so solid as a fire guard.

Nose cone removed to access crash panels. A quick sand and paint should suffice

Gearbox returned from Ashcroft Transmissions in Luton. Looks fantastic.

Congrats on the rare SA.
I have an SA but its not really drivable at the moment as needs full suspension rebuild, new power steering, AC doesnt work, sagging headling....I could go on and on but loving every minute of the restoration.

Is that your original torque converter or did you get a reconditioned one? Is that the strap fitted by Ashcroft? So clean - shame you'll never see it one it's fitted!!
