Being a Lucas motor, it is found on many British vehicles.

The Defender has a similar motor system. Take it apart and it is almost the same as the Excel unit.

This enterprising soul discovered how to increase the angle of stroke.

Perfect for getting the Excel wiper to park in the correct spot!

That's a very strange way to alter the sweep angle. These systems work on a coil/ spring being moved within a fixed tube which causes a cog to oscillate turning the shaft of the wiper arm. The system has several different sweep cogs available (well it's the cog and the small box it sits in) so to alter the sweep it's normally just a matter of a smaller cog = greater sweep.

I would certainly agree with your comments.

However in my Excel the gear wheel is marked 170degrees and only gives about 135degrees.

You could of course reduce the length of the connecting rod between the rotating gear and the beginning of the coil. Making a reduced connecting rod would be easier than bastardizing the gear wheel.

I have a feeling the wrong connecting rod was aligned with the 170 degree gear when Lucas put them together at the time of manufacture.
