Door Check Strap - early Excel

Well, after 30+ years I decided to fix the broken drivers door strap on my '83 Excel.
it was all attached, just didn't hold the door open, so after a bit of research I guessed it
probably just needed a new spring.
Sadly, when I took it apart i found this:

Not what I was expecting!
It's been repaired before, and broken again.
Seems to be the same as an S1 Esprit , but where can I get one of these from?
The cranked arms seem to be available, but I can't seem to find the main body part.

That's what I was expecting to see!
Interesting to see the bare beam has two mounting lugs which are used to mount the older type of strap.
I wonder if I could use this newer type?
Need to look inside my door again . . . . . . .

There are differences both on the strap mechanism and on the boss at the top hinge plate. Then even with the newer design Hawaiis0 posted there are two subtle differences. Get them mixed and either the door won't shut, or it opens, but not as far.!!!
I'd suggest changing like for like.
What's the other door like? The plate is ambidextrous. With a little work, you can use swop the plates between sides and make use of the good half. Can't see your spring. I assume you have it.

Also sent a PM, but maybe same info as Pete sent.

The locking part (Which is what I think you need) looks incredibly similar to those fitted to the Rover P6 2000, 2200, 3500.

Hi Tony, no PM?
I've read up on the strap opening/closing/different length problems, like-for-like is definitly the way to go!
I can't access the passenger side at the moment, or any time soon, and anyway, the spring is missing.
I've had the car from when it was 6 years old, and it's always been broken, obviously not a very robust part.

That's interesting, I guessed it wouldn't be a Lotus part.
Both bits of mine are broke, the main slider piece obviously, but also the cranked arm T piece has snapped but this part seems to be readilly available.
Both left and right are out of stock on that site, but it's a good starting point, many thanks.

I've had trouble with PM's before.
I'll try from computer later this evening instead of tablet.

Sent PM again. Hopefully this time.
Question to anyone : When I send messages, they show in the Outbox, not in the Sent box - At least initially. I presume this is normal?

Pms will show in your outbox until the recipient opens them. Hope this clears it up.

If anyone has evidence of a pm not being received by the intended recipient then let me know so I can report it as a fault.

Cheers, Richard

Thanks Richard.
Never knew that, but makes perfect sense.
Must be something I do wrong on tablet. Screen does look slightly different.
