How do you remove the windscreen vent trim?

As per the title really. Mine are looking all shrivelled and knackered. As a temporary measure I want to make something a bit nicer to look at, but I don't want to tear the dash out.
Do they just pull out? Could I chop it away with a stanley knife?
Thanks,
Dan

What car? Assume you mean trim between dash and windscreen where the demisting vents are ?
Excel 86MY on - the leather goes under the dash, so it’s dash out.
Elite, éclat and early Excel - I think it’s a piece that can be removed without removing the dash (at least it can in the prototype Excel).

YES! I'm an early Excel, so fingers crossed.
