has anyone experienced problems with the door locks - recently the passenger door catch would not work - the door would just open - the car has central locking

I had the exact opposite - my driver's door wouldn't unlock - the whole mechanism had failed. Replacement was a Triumph part from Rimmer Bros.

BUT - before you resort to that, whip off the door card and check the alignment and adjustment of all the connecting rods - and make sure it works (or doesn't) with the central locking actuator unplugged.

My drivers door lock fell into the door when I went to lock it so I took the inside of the door off and pushed the clip back into place. Then when I next locked the car at a service station, it wouldn't open and I was there for ages trying to get back in!

The inside clip has broken and won't lock so I leave it unlocked to be safe. I can't lock the passenger door because when I do it immediately unlocks anyway.

Plus, most mornings I have to give the handles a loving thump to be able to open the door as the latch seems to stick. Anyone trying to nick it wouldn't realise this and would think it was locked properly!

Until I can get it fixed I'm not too bothered. For me the fun starts even before I get into the car which just gives her added character :D

Hi Angus

When you say replacement part was from a triumph are you refering to the latch mechanism that the connecting rods attach to. If so can you remember which model its off as mine has failed this morning !

Bad news all, Rimmer Bros has these parts now listed as "No Longer Available".

Today I have become a Grand Master in the ways of the latch!! Mine was broken and the door wouldn't lock properly and it was starting to become difficult to even open the door sometimes - it took two of us (me and Alan) to get the car open at Chatsworth  . Time for some investigation: The latch has a sliding element connected directly to the complicated-looking locking plate - the bit with the Z-shaped cut-out - it was this sliding part that was broken inside the latch itself. I dismantled the latch by drilling out the single countersunk rivet that holds it together (firing a small spring into orbit as soon as I opened it!!) and fabricated a new sliding element. Rebuilt it and finally got to grips with the adjustment of all the rods. Result - one working latch/door all for the cost of 35mm of 2mm angle iron and 6 hours in the garage. For the first time since owning the car (ten years) I finally completely understand the door handle/latch/locking arrangement!! :D
