I have had two problems with my head lights so far. The easiest thing to check is the fuse for the head light motor which had blown. The other problem is the push rod had disconnected from the light which is a bit harder to fix it’s a bonnet off job then you can get to the rod and replace the retaining nut. I would recommend using thread lock or you will be doing this regally. If neither of these problems then I would remove the fuse for the light motor and manually wind the lights up from under the car. Least then you can get it through the mot and fix the problem at your leisure.

in relation to switching the motors over lucas/toyota.... its a BIG job... you have to chane/make a new harness and utilise all the bits of ecu and relays from the 86- and thats before you try and splice in the older switchgear... its much easier to switch a lucas motor out for another lucas motor... 30min - 1 hour if nothing major sticks or snaps...

Surely you can just pull the pod up by hand, remove the headlamp itself (two plastic push-in fasteners for the black surrounding trim and 3 pop-in fasteners on the headlamp ring) and then either undo the pod or re-attach the rod through the headlamp hole ?
