Dash Lights

Hi gents, I have a 1983 model Excel and the dash lights are almost non existent, all the bulbs have been changed and the rheostat is wound all the way around.
I've gathered from older posts that the lights & rheostat are flakey to say the least, so am I better off bypassing the rheostat and setting the lights to maximum illumination?
Next question how do you bypass the rheostat, i assume it is by bridging the wires going to it, but which ones?
