Hi All,
Which starter motor is used on a 1987 SA Auto ?
Can the lightweight high torque starter motor be used on a auto?
Cheers Roger

According to the parts manual (PM Spav on this forum for details of how to get access and bear in mind that we are the only group with factory permission to make it available to our members) it's either a Lucas 3M100 or Lucas M80R.
They're standard motors and any competent rewinder should have no trouble rebuilding them if necessary. I certainly had no problem getting the solenoid on mine repaired after it failed in Madrid last year (managed to get the car home first, but starting was very touch and go).

Are you sure the problem is caused by the starter motor?
The battery and the starter/generator are seperated by app. 3 m of cable and at least 4 connections.
A weak connection from the battery to the starter can cause the starter motor just to activate and not turn the engine over.
The problem goes both ways as the battery will not charge with 14,2 V.
Try to meassure the voltage at the starter when activated - and the charging voltage at the battery at min. 3000 rpm.
I had this problem with both a Fiat X1/9 and a Matra Murena.
Good luck.

Hi Angus,
Many thanks for that info,i have ordered a new high torque starter from Euro Elec direct next day delivery who make these starters from motorsport.
Lightweight use 50% less power & fast turn over for HC engine.
Eclat Track car driver uses this starter works better than standard starter.
