cam oil seal

Post by Boomer »

Hi guys i am in the process of changing the front oil seals on my 87 SE (2x cam, oil pump and crank) i was wondering what people have used for a drift for getting the cam oil seals back in the housing without damaging them? I ruined a new seal today by tring to push it in with my fingers, getting it on the wonk and being forced to get it back out with a hammer and screwdriver. I am also interested to hear of other peoples experiences of changing the crank seal as i have heard that you need a special tool otherwise it will permenanlty leak??? the oil pump seal seems to have gone in ok even though it has to go over a raised ring on the shaft.

Any help would be much appreciated

Hmm I think I just tapped it in carefully with a soft mallet...I think it was in situ at the time, which means the camshaft centred it....perhaps you were just unlucky?

With the front and rear crank seals I think it's the amount of protrusion that's critical. I had mine fitted by Ross Hockley who's done 'em a million times.

I've used the old seal as a drift.

I pressed mine in with a hydraulic press, before I had one I put one in with a suitable size socket (yes I had one big enough for the crank seals), far easier with the press.
