Do you have a hankering to get the MIG out ?

Post by jasonc00001 »

Tired of cracking fibreglass, balancing your carbs, door window frames that rust away, tyres that are getting harder to find, rear wheel drive, cambelt tensioning issues, alternators with a negative earth, PAS and servo'd brakes.
Have a hankering to get the MIG welder out ?
Want tappets that you can adjust in minutes ?
This could be for you....

Sorry , couldn't resist, but as we are all a little bit 'car nuts'.

Morris 1100 MkII 1971 20,000 miles Restoration Project / Barn Find 4 door

Bought last September from a friend who 'got ill' and 'passed away' at the start of his restoration of the Morris 1100.

The story...

Lady owner from new, who drove it to the local shops till march 2004 when she bumped into the gate post. The car then got reversed into her garage and left. I believe she never drove again.

In 2013 the lady 'passed away' and her neighbour (my friend) bought it to restore in his retirement. 'It'll get me out of the house !'

Sub frame , rear brakes reconditioned, car partially stripped and put into boxes.

My friend passed away Sept 2015 and the car came to me.

I've re-instated the mechanicals, engine (original head has had hardened valve inserts done for unleaded - Jan 2016) , hydro-lastic suspension re-filled, brakes (wheels end), clutch , electricals checked, fuel pump re-commissioned.

So it now starts ,runs and stops-ish.

I've done a quick look around and the obvious problems / welding listed below. (I had planned to do it properly, new sills, etc... but I'm loathed to patch it up for an MOT and make it harder to re-instate later).

The good,

1971 - maker her 45- ish years old. Tax exempt.

21,000 miles. (see MOT)

Engine sounds like new

Interior is like new, seats look like they've never been sat in.

even the window winders feel new.

Starts , runs , drives.

Problems :-

Front valence rusty

Both headlight surrounds rusty / missing.

drivers wing , dented and rusty missing ( new 3 part wing supplied)

passenger wing , dinted , rusty / missing at bottom

drivers sill holed / rusty

passenger sill holed / rusty

drivers floor patched badly and fibre glassed internally

passenger floor patched and fibre glassed internally

drivers doors (both) need door bottoms

passengers doors front needs door bottom

both rear wheelarches badly repaired

rear valance to wing (both sides) rusty / holed / badly repaired.

Rear subframe mounting plates attached but need checking.

The original paint has lost it gleam and 'my friend' has rubbed down bits of rust and primed.

All the chrome is there, mainly on the car, some loose , but some is marked.

I can't find the rear boot wheel / parcel shelf.

Little paperwork, one MOT , few service bills , logbook - 2 previous owners (as per above)

There's going to be other things that I've missed.

24/3/2016 - been driving it around the yard. Steering has no play, nice and tight. Steering wheel is as new. Sounds like a nice engine, no un-toward noises.

20/06/2016 - started first time and warms up to temperature. Tried explaining to the 'kids' what a choke is for but they drifted off...

21/08/2016 - started first time , brakes needed a good pump to operate (probably the master cylinder seals). Ran out of petrol - must get some more !

It owes me £800 , but open to sensible offers !
