Elite bumpers restoration (and question)

Post by AndrewWebber »

The bumpers on my Elite were 'too' scruffy - cracked, poorly repaired, crazed, one shiny one matt. So I decided to try and renovate them, at least to be more in keeping with the rest of it. (I'll be happier once they have few flies, exhaust mist and other detritus on them to look less 'restored').

Removed and stripped, repaired cracks and crazing with new fibre glass, filled, heading towards primer.

Image

Primed, flatted then sprayed with multiple coats of 'custom made' mix of satin and matt black, rattle cans, there is a bit more 'texture' than I was expecting but decided to go with it rather than try and flat it down, refitted (cleaned internally) the lights.

Image

Purchased new edge seal (slightly beefier than original but acceptable (for me)), decided to apply a thin coat of rubber glue to inside as old perished one started coming off a few times at speed.

So a question please, before I put the front one back on...should the edge seal also be affixed around the nose aperture? There was none he on mine currently, and of course it is inside the grill so probably not?

I wouldn't think so - I suspect it would look a bit odd and probably get blown off by the gale of air passing over it. Mine didn't have any either.

No pictures for me now - I could see them when you originally posted. Have had a similar issue with a few other threads as well.

Just checked - I can see them on my phone, but not on my pc - too clever for me to understand what's happening....

So yesterday I could see them, today I can't, same lap top, same router.

More complicated than an Elite...

Another question please. The 'top' surface of the rear bumper does not have a simple straight (or gentle curve) edge to it, rather is has a part for 600mm or so in the centre that sits forward (towards the front of the car) by 25mm or so. Now I've put it back on the edge rubber seal is visible either side of this but because of the 25mm inset in the central portion it is not visible giving the appearance of a gap there. I hope the photo is visible to help understanding! I don't recall this from before but the old seal was partly gone and the poor previous repaint of the bumper on the car had left some black overspray on the gold between the body waistline join strip and the bumper so possible tended to disguise the 'gap'.

So have I got something wrong or is it now as intended please?

Thanks

Not seen my bumpers for a long while so I went up into the loft to take a look! I assume you mean front bumper Andy? My front bumper does have a gentle curve that follows the curvature of the front of the car - no sticking-out bits. The width of the top surface is equal across the entire length.
