Headlining colour?

Post by AndyC »

The headlining in my latest purchase needs to be replaced (note, not removed...) and I'm not sure which colour to use.

It had grey, and two bits of it are in good condition (I'm guessing they've been re-trimmed quite recently), but I just don't see it as going with the interior. So what's the consensus?

Silk Red SE
Cream (dark cream but not sand) half leather interior.
Brown carpets (not sure about those either, I'm thinking similar colour to leather would be better).

What colour headlining?
Grey
or
Beige

I'm guessing that the fact I'm even asking and the way I question grey going with the interior hints which I think I would prefer.. but it's not a one hoarse race, according to the poll responses.

Im sure there are a couple of greys. I seem to remember woolies sent out at least 2 on a card for me to match up.

I replaced mine with the original beige -well, a good match from Woolies - but I kinda like grey (though that would mean a re-carpet job as well). :|

Not as decisive as I thought it would be, 10, 6, 3, can really be read as 13, 9 in favour of beige, but not exactly a big majority.

I suppose the main thing is that I was considering swapping to beige, the poll has indicated it's not the worst thing I could do.

I think some other jobs come before that in the priority list, one of the first being new cam belt, previous owner has the car around 7 years and didn't have it changed. While I'm there I may as well shim the valves up as they sound a bit loose, then give it a general service.

Is it unusual for the clearances to open up with wear? Mine usually close down :?:

Going a bit off-topic here and it's my fault.

Closing up through wear is valve surface or valve seat surfaces wearing, which is normal while they bed in (if they've just been ground or lapped).
Opening up is normally due to the end of the valve stem wearing into the shim, which isn't normally too bad, but as the car I've just bought has done 10 thousand miles in 7 years I can only deduce it had a lot of starts where the oil had all drained back from the heads, so not much protection for the stem-shim surface, and it's only splash lubrication anyway. That may have accelerated the wear. Eitehr that or whoever last did them (possibly not since factory) left them very lose.
