Starting problems

For all those wiring gremlins we love, this is the place to discuss them.

Starting problems

Post by very_worried_man »

Car has been going like a dream, when today I turned the key having popped into the shop and... nothing happened. I've looked through some old threads to see if there are things that apply to my problem- but I need some help. I really hate electrics and am rubbish at sorting them.

I have:

1. A brand new ( 3 week old ) Varta type 96 super dooper Silver battery
2. A Volts reading of 12 - 13v on pre-ignition
3. A reading of 14-15 when running (I got a push start)
4. Strong battery delivery to lights, windows etc
5. NO starter at all, just the click on turning the key all the way round.
6. The battery connections are fine and tight.

- I assume the alternator to be charging OK cos of the 14 plus volts when running.
- I replaced the old battery because it was struggling to start the car and showed from the service history as 7 years old and I had run it dry at least twice.

The problem once happened to me before, got nothing just the click and since then it worked every time.

I assume I have a dodgy connection, but could the starter be knackered, or am I in bad earth territory?

Try taping the end of the starter with a medium sized hammer.

Thanks Guys.

I have a hammer! and the relay can be got painlessly so we'll see if that sorts it - otherwise I'll keep it parked at the top of a nice steep hill. Oops just remembered. I live in the fens......

Had similar problem .Either slow to turn or not turning. Starter Drawing too much current and starving electrical system causing weak spark too. Should turn over really easily
