I decided to take advantage of the warm weather this afternoon to rustproof the doorbeams on my car. I bought some Dynax S50 Extreme anti corrosion wax in an aerosol for the job. It's supposed to be heavy duty stuff and be able to stop corrosion from progressing although only time will tell if it does.
The beams themselves are in good solid condition but I was surprized at how easy it was to get the paint to flake off them. I ended up scraping most of it off before I applied the wax. The were painted the same colour blue as the rest of the bodywork and I realized they appeared not to have had any undercoat! No wonder the paint was coming off in sheets.
If anyone else has looked at their doorbeams and thought they were nicely painted it might be worth checking to see if the paint is still actually adhereing to the steel. If not it makes a lovely moisture trap.
I also removed a big wedge of dark grey sponge which would be very effective in holding dampness against the beam.
