Post by Big Jim »

Hi
does any one have a door check spring for a 1985 SE , drivers side . Perhaps if I could borrow one ,I am sure I could remake from piano wire.
Thanks Jim

SJ sportscars sell them, only a few £s. He has driver's side but passenger are apparently on back order form Lotus and have been for quite some time.

And will continue in this state as far as we know.

Anything in the Lotus parts list over 20 (maybe even 10?) years old was declared obsolete a couple of years ago.

Thank you Andy , I will try them tomorrow
I tried Lotus bits today ,£15 for a used one .It is a simple shape to make . It would cost about £3 in piano wire . I had to make some obsolete trim clips for another car , 18 of them .

The wire is approx 4mm thick. If it helps I have a broken driver's side (the two parts of it) that's in my scrap metal bin. I'll try and dig it out and take pics and measurements. In that respect, you'de be set up for making the passenger side as it's just the mirror image.

Justy checked SJ, new is less than £1 + VAT + delivery, which brings it to £5.35 all in.

Managed to weld mine back together and is actually still working. Welding was obviously to a better standard than usual...

It doesn't take too much force as it just pushes the door check strap across when fully open. Must ensure that the check strap is free and easy to move on its bolt though.

Thanks Andy , If you could do me a photo or draw round it,with a few dimensions , that would be great . I have ordered some wire .I had a broken remnant and it was 3.6mm . If I had known they were only a fiver I would have bought one.

I've searched but can only find part of the spring. I know I placed (threw) both parts in the same spot. It's an absolute tip in ,my garage at present so I will tidy up and keep looking as I do.

Almost
If you have time would you mind turning the spring round and lining it up with the hole it fits in , so I can see were the bend at the other end starts and finishes
Thanks Jim

This should do, note the length of the spring going down into the check strap will be restricted by the door beam when you open the door. That will give you the maximum from memory it was about 10mm

Sorry was on photo bucket uploading

Done it today , thanks for the photos . This would have been easy on a bare door beam , but a real struggle on an assembled door .
