2017 : Goodwood?

Post by amarshall »

Anyone fancy a bit of track time at Goodwood on Thursday 18th May 2017 ? Possibly sharing with the French Lotus owners ?
Maybe tie it in with a trip to Beaulieu the day before or after?

Most likely to be a noise limit of 98dB, although we could go higher (Pete, Jerry - I'm looking sternly at you) at 105dB if we're willing to pay more.

What would the cost difference be between the two decibel levels?
I am sure if there are enough naughty exhausts it would push down the cost.

Should've known that'd be the first question! I'll let you know, based on numbers for the Croft event.

I've been round Goodwood on both 98 & 105 db days and there were 10 cars on track at 98db whereas only 5 for the 105. This was a couple of years ago, so relatively recently.

I might be up for that. Might have to check my db level though. The middle box is a noisy little b***er

Hence paying for the higher level.
There are not many trackdays that go above 102 db. I personally would pay an extra £10-15 to not have have to back off the accelerator on one corner like at Croft due to the microphone placement and be black flagged like Jerry  .

An old school race engine on full chat is a beautiful thing. There arent many places you can hear them by the side of the track without hinderance.
Given some of the events I have attenedes recently that have been absolute shockers for the crowd - Ingliston and Royal Deeside speed festival were notably poor due to "restrictions".
Arguably the best one that always delivers is a relatively small event on a tiny track at the Grampian Transport Museum as no restrictions or fun police are allowed to attend.

Am I mistaken, or does Club Lotus not usually already run a track day at Goodwood ? - I seem to remember something that took place this year, so assumed that they will run another for next?

I've never taken a car round any circuit, but I am certainly interested in doing so. I have to change my springs and dampers before though (which I bought from SJ earlier this year but haven't fitted yet). Maybe this could be the motivation that I need to get on and change them!

Please add my name to the list, may not be the quickest on the day but the opportunity to take the car around Goodwood with fellow compatriots would be an opportunity not to be missed. A great venue.
Club Lotus did hold a track day earlier in the year 30th April and as I recall their was only one Excel although he did circulate fairly rapidly.
Look forward to reading more info.

OK - sounds like a positive idea so far. As long prices are sensible (i.e. not like the venue I was trying to get for this year) I'll see what can be done to put together another 2-day jolly.

Sounds like fun Angus 8) I'm local-ish to Goodwood so may be able to help in some way if needed.

Chris Parker with Surrey, then Sussex, Club Lotus has been running a track day at Goodwood for the last 27 years. For the first few years it was £50 a head, limited to 20 cars. 5 on the track at any one time. No noise checking or anything like that. Fantastic day out.

Bell & Colvill do a couple of track days a year there as well (105db).

This is from 1988/9 (not my car). The track was a bit scruffy back then.

Yes, it's a bit more sanitised now.

Back in the late 80s there were no marshals, no noise testing, no flags, no safety briefing. it was all organised internally. There were no pit garages, it was all gravel.

Yes, I'm interested and I'll check with Rick to see if he can bring his yellow Excel as well.

Well, if I was right all the time I'd get to be predictable!

Chrisj memory lane just shows what can be done when the Goodwood coffers were running dry and action required. Lord March has certainly turned the fortunes round of the Goodwood Estate.

Interesting to see the two photos, apparently Friday 28th October will see the end of Mithril racing, thats their car on the later track day photo
