Sump plug

Post by Skeggy »

Went to change oil this weekend and couldn't get the sump plug out

It's a brass plug and even with a single hex socket it just slipped. Didn't want to hammer it as I didn't want to damage the alloy sump.

Anyone had this problem or do you all take your cars to a dealer to service them

'Cause I'm going to get violent (mole grips) with the sump plug I need to know where do I get a new sump plug from?
Some of them are just driving a racing car but some are racing drivers.

That sump plug sounds pricey - I'm sure I bought one from Sportomotive for a few quid (probably 5 years ago though!).

Grind a flat on it, and use mole grips!

That's what I did! Then curse previous owner for doing it up too tight, along with the oil filter, and all the spark plugs.... and the wheel nuts... and every other bloody bolt....

I had someone hammer on a socket - got the nut off and didn't damage the sump, I thought I paid less (although I can't remember) for the plug.

Don't do the new one up too tight!!

try using a small pair of stillsons ,they should give enough grip if you have rounded the flats

Stillsons sound a very good idea, about the only tool I've not got!

Not brave enough to hammer a socket on - and there is NO WAY I'm going to over tighten the replacement

Nice idea about Kwik Fit  But there is no way I'm am letting an 18 year old drive my beloved Lotus - hang on I want my 18 year old son to have a go in it, just to show him what a real car is like :D

On balance I think I'll try the stillson route, but not this weekend (British GP) or next (LeMans) - wish me luck!

BTW there appears to be some sporting(?) event starting this weekend in Germany - not heard much about it

When you've seen them kick the ball once, you've seen them kick the ball a thousand times.

And they don't even have a pit stop!! :D

A ball is involved? Is that like a ball joint

Must admit I wish F1 would do away with fuel pit stops.

I thought they did, but both teams seem to take it at exactly the same time and just as long as each other.....
