Two petrol filler caps?

Post by Skeggy »

Just noticed that an Excel for sale on Ebay has what appears to be a petrol filler cap on the drivers side and one on the passenger side.

Ebay item number: 4644275995

Did earlier or non se cars have this?

My '86 se only has the one on the passenger side - but if you drive it right a second tank could be useful.

Early cars had a fake filler cap on one side.

I guess the fake ones were a hangover from the Elite and Eclat which had a working filler on each side, very handy

Mine hasn't, nor has the one in the 1983 autocar test, anyone else got an early car with this novelty?

Both of my '83 Excels have a Lotus sticker on a blank circular area, but there is no "dummy filler cap".

That blue Excel on ebay is just the way I want mine to look when I finish, (but with a better interior).

Yes, my '84 car has the fake one.
Well it "had" a fake one. I thought it looked too . . errr . . fake, so replaced it with a real one. There's nothing behind it, mind you.

Hi Guys,

Anyone in Medway will know this car, (I have not included the license plate or house number in the picture to keep the owners confidentially).

This car has that dummy petrol cap by the looks of it. The owner is a lovely old man, who bought it brand new, and then blew the head gasket going up Blue Bell Hill near the M20. That was in 1986, and it hasn't moved since! Don't try making him an offer, as many many others have in the past, he will turn you down! Must have all of 2000 miles on the clock...

Thanks for the replies - I must not have notices the dummy cap before

Chris - the pictures are very sad, no doubt the man has a good reason for not selling it. But I hope that one day it will go to a good home.

Regards,
Steve

Chris,

I live about 100yards down the road from that poor Excel, I've spoke to the elderly chap who owns it several times.

He is sure he's going to get it back on the road but has been saying that since it broke apparently :(

I've had a look round it, and as you can see its in a very poor state. The interior is a mess too, the dash and steering wheel have been ripped out and the last time I looked it had about 6'' of water inside.

Very sad.

Hi Mick,

You might have seen me walk past your house yesterday then, clutching a camera.....

I went round there 2 years ago because I wanted to copy the radiator plumbing arrangement on his car on to my one (that was in bits at the time). It was the only other Excel I had ever seen at that point, even if it was a mossy shade of green.

Yes, the interior was all missing then, I don't remember any water being in it, but with only 6" of water he isn't trying, as you could keep fish in mine!

It is a strange time warp in that house, but his wife made a very nice cup of tea and some home made bread.

When I am up and running Mick I'll have to show you my Excel, as you seem very local to me. I am in Parkwood in Rainham.

If you need to compare anything car wise let me know.
