Front lip / chin spoiler for SE pre '89

Post by DWH »

Can anyone tell me the dimensions (principally the depth) of the fibreglass front lip / chin spoiler for a pre 89 SE please. I've search earlier thread but can't find any measurements or photos.
I've read that one from an early Mondeo can be used, but don't know which years / models of Mondeos this relates to. The idea of a mass produced plastic one instead of the seemingly fragile fibreglass on makes sense but only if it looks and fits ok.
I also understand that there are also side panels, the dimensions and photos of those would be great too. The photos in the brochure don't show any detail as it's in shadow.
Thanks
David

Not had much joy with responses to this one.

From the 1987 sales brochure, the two tier front spoiler looked to be the same depth as the height of the indicator / side light unit which is 3". This would reduce the front ground clearance from 8" to 5" and so I see why so few (if any) cars still have the original ones left in one piece.

I have been looking at cars as I drive past them and thought the Vectra looked a likely candidate and so I went to a very local car dismantler's business to have a look and see whether there were any cars there that might fit the bill.

No Vectras but there was a 1997 Golf GTi that was sitting on top of another car and for the spoiler was very accessible and not too scratched. It was a simple "pull to remove" and no tools were required to get it off. The part numbers for the two parts are : nearside - IH6 805 905 and offside - IH6 805 904

The Golf item is 3" deep but about 5cm too short in over all width and the corners needed "moving" in towards the centre. The material is very flexible and I was about to change where the bends were using a jigsaw and I bolted it to the Excel bumper panel using 30mm M6 stainless bolts and penny washers with nylocks. In hind sight, 25mm bolts would have been better.

The finished effect is (IMHO) very good and the lack of 2.5cm at each end by the wheels is not really important, in fact because of the angle of the end of the spoiler, it looks as if it's meant to be like that

The front of the spoiler is flat and so I can cut any holes into it with relative ease with a dremel tool / jigsaw once I've decided where they should go.

I have taken photos but my Excel was still on the lift in my workshop and the lighting is terrible in the photos so the black spoiler becomes invisible......not very useful.

I'll go now and get the car out and then add some photos.

Here's one of the end result, also with some sunshine !!!! Other are in my photobucket album.

You can buy an after market spoiler for the MK3 Golf on Ebay for £17.95 delivered (both sides) but not sure about quality.

It might not be the same as the original Lotus item, but looks very convincing and should be less prone to damage.

As an aside, I also have a 1986 Esprit Turbo in storage at the moment and the ground clearance for that at the front is 8", seems odd that the Excel would have had less !!

Looks good and picks up the bumper inserts, may be the black on white also helps it.
