Re: COLIN CHAPMAN's ECLAT FOR SALE
"...“Jabby” used it regularly until he decided to sell his personal cars shortly before passing away in 2004..."
That sort of factual accuracy has me wondering how much of the rest of the description can be trusted...

M. Crombac died in 2005, not 2004. The cars were sold at auction in December 2004, ISTR.

Re: COLIN CHAPMAN's ECLAT FOR SALE
...........i always thought Mr Chapman liked the Elite and in fact this Eclat was for Mrs Chapman to use as this was one of her favourite colours and trim specs? (regardless of what publicity pictures show for the period? ). hence why later Excels were given to her also?
If Mrs Chapman ever wrote a book about the real story behind Lotus that would be a great eye opener, eh?
the excitement stems from when a car the Chapmans may have used is for sale and publicity pictures appear showing it. apparently Mr Chapman and a number of the directors constantly took cars from the production line, used them and they were 'tarted' back up and sold as new etc - to keep abreast of production quality. so u could really guess which cars were regularly used ................
regards all.

We don't all think without emotions influencing desires and decisions over logic.alanbell wrote:it may have belonged to chapman but it's no better than any other éclat in similar condition so why the excitement.

Re: COLIN CHAPMAN's ECLAT FOR SALE
Someone may pay a bit extra for the history and association, but probably not as much as currently asked. Can anyone recall what it made at auction in 2004ish?

Re: COLIN CHAPMAN's ECLAT FOR SALE
peter,
I agree that there is some emotion invoved in the purchase of a car, if there was not I would not own a lotus. what I can not understand is the interest in, or willingness to pay a premium for, a car or anything else simply because it belonged to a well known person.

Re: COLIN CHAPMAN's ECLAT FOR SALE
Depends how much money someone has, I suppose, Alan.
Personally (not having much!) my main criteria's usually the best condition for my buck. But if money is no object, I can understand people paying extra for something owned by someone they've admired or held in thrall.
